Samsung finally confirms launch plans for its first tri-folding phone

Multiple reports and rumors indicate Samsung will launch its first tri-fold later this year. Many expected Samsung to showcase its tri-folding device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 at the July Unpacked event. However, that didn’t happen, with the company not even talking about the device on stage during its recently concluded Unpacked. But that doesn’t mean a launch is off the table, as Samsung itself has confirmed its tri-folding device will debut later this year.

In a statement to The Korea Times, Roh Tae-moon, Samsung’s acting head of Device Experience Division, confirmed the company’s plan to launch its tri-fold smartphone this year. “We are working hard on a tri-fold smartphone with the goal of launching it at the end of this year. We are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not decided its name. As the product nears completion, we are planning to make a final decision soon,” said Roh.

So, while not as big as its January and July Unpacked events, expect Samsung to hold another device launch event later in the year.

Leaks suggest Samsung’s first tri-fold smartphone could sport a 10-inch display. It will seemingly feature a titanium frame for added durability, with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset being the star of the show. Other aspects of the device should be similar to the Z Fold 7.

Hidden animation files in the One UI 8 beta firmware have already offered us a glimpse at Samsung’s upcoming tri-folding phone’s design. It will supposedly look similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, with one additional folding panel. One of the warning videos found in the firmware also highlights how not to fold the device. It advises users not to fold the panel with the rear cameras first.

When Samsung eventually launches its first tri-folding phone, expect it to be available only in limited quantities and in select markets. The price will likely be exorbitant as well, possibly hitting the $3,000 mark, especially considering the Galaxy Z Fold 7 already starts at $2,000.
