Massachusetts Cell Phone Ban in Schools

Disclaimer: I am not a parent. I do not know what it is like to be disconnected from my child during school hours. That being said, I was a child who was disconnected during school hours. Here is my take.

Massachusetts Ban on Cell Phones in School

According to an NBC Boston article, the Massachusetts Senate is moving a bill forward that would ban cell phone use in K-12 schools. The key component of this bill is that the ban is “bell to bell.” AKA only during school hours.

The biggest concern that parents and others who are against this bill seem to have is that they will not be able to contact their children. But…isn’t that the point of school? And haven’t children been under that ruling for hundreds of years?

Parents can still get in touch with their children if they need to during school. Conversely, children can get in contact with their parents. I cannot tell you how many times I had the school nurse or the receptionist at my high school contact my mom. I constantly forgot school projects, homework, and my sports jerseys.

You go to the office and have an adult call them. Students will have their cell phones up until the first bell, and will get them back immediately at the end of the day. This all seems standard to me.

We are all distracted by our phones. Instagram, games, and even looking at old photos pull us away from our present moment. Kids shouldn’t be doing that in schools…I can’t even imagine trying to be a teacher and attempting to limit kids’ phone use.

The bill is currently supported by the Massachusetts Attorney General and Governor Maura Healey.
