Due to safety issues, Ford is recalling over 850,000 of its cars across the U.S.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects a broad selection of recently manufactured vehicles under the Ford and Lincoln brands, including specific models such as the Ford Bronco, Explorer, F-150, and the Lincoln Aviator and Navigator.

Here’s why these vehicles are being recalled.

Why is Ford recalling cars?

Due to a faulty fuel pump, Ford is recalling hundreds of thousands of their vehicles. A bad fuel pump can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly.

Ford said it began sending letters to affected owners this week to warn of safety risks related to potential fuel pump failures. As of now, there are 11 types of Ford vehicles being called back according to the safety recall report.

Ford anticipates that roughly 10% of the 850,318 vehicles being recalled across the U.S. may be affected by the faulty fuel pump issue. The recall spans a range of models, including certain 2021–2023 Ford Broncos, Explorers, and Lincoln Aviators. It also includes the 2021–2023 Ford Super Duty trucks, such as the F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550. Additionally, select 2021–2022 Lincoln Navigators, Ford Mustangs, and F-150s are impacted, along with specific 2022 Expeditions.

What is a fuel pump?

The fuel pump assembly is like the heart of your car’s fuel system. Without it, your car can’t get the fuel to where it needs to go for it to run.

Here’s what it does:

  • Sends clean fuel to the engine, allowing it to run properly.
  • Tells the dashboard how much fuel is left.
  • Helps shut off the gas nozzle when you’re filling up.
