Best Station Wagons | 2025 New Wagon Car Models Ratings

Station wagons may not be as popular as they once were, but they are still available in the US and sell well in certain markets. These vehicles are built on sedan frames with extended length for additional interior space. They handle a bit better than SUVs which use pickup truck frames, but don’t offer quite as much practicality or an assertive seating position for the driver. This is one of the reasons that wagon vehicles have fallen behind in sales in the USA. Nonetheless, a few automaker brands have remained faithful to the body style, and here we list our rankings of the best station wagons of 2025.

Vehicles are assigned a BuzzScore in relation to their direct segment competitors, and as such, vehicles in this list, while similarly scored, do not necessarily compete directly against one another. Find out more about how the BuzzScore ratings work here. These lists are continuously updated with the latest BuzzScores and vehicles as they become available.

9 /10

The best wagon, according to our BuzzScore system, is the Volvo V60 Cross Country with an 8.6 out of 10. Volvo has consistently made some great wagons for decades, and the V60 Cross Country joins that legacy. Its simple, yet elegant and modern styling lends to a high-end driving experience. This Volvo wagon starts at $50,300. Powering the V60 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The interior has five seats, and those in the rear seats have 35.2 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom. When the rear seats are folded down, you can fit 60.5 cubic feet of cargo. With Volvo potentially moving away from wagons in the near future, our advice is to get one of these practical and classy vehicles while you still can.

If you want to step out of a car calmer than you got in, Volvo is definitely a brand to consider. In this case, the Cross Country’s ride is lovely for heading into town or swanning about in the countryside. There’s never harshness, and big bumps have the edge taken off before they’re transmitted into the chassis.

Audi makes a handful of the best wagons that we’ll talk about today. The first of the bunch on our list is the Audi A4 Allroad. It’s mostly the same as the standard A4, but it comes in a classic wagon shape with slightly more ground clearance and some other stylistic design choices to set it apart. The A4 Allroad starts at $47,600. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. On the inside, you can fit up to five people. The rear passengers get up to 35.7 inches of legroom, and 37.4 inches of headroom. Cargo space maxes out at 58.4 cubic feet with the seats folded.

While the A4 Allroad is a great entry-level Audi wagon, the next step is an A6 Allroad. This Audi is slightly larger, more expensive, and has more of the luxurious comfort and convenience features you can expect from the brand. Since it’s one of the best luxury family cars, it’s more expensive with a starting price of $70,500. For that price, you get a larger engine, as well; the A6 Avant has a 3.0-liter turbo V6 that makes 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. On the inside, this version of the A6 can still hold up to five people, and those in the back have 39.5 inches of headroom and 37.4 inches of legroom. With the seats in their upright position, you have 30 cu. ft. of space in the trunk.

8.5 /10

In a world of crossovers and SUVs, cool station wagons are increasingly more difficult to find. However, the Audi RS6 Avant breaks the barrier and provides a supreme driving experience with lots of power, a luxurious interior, and modern amenities while remaining a practical station wagon. Unfortunately, that comes at a steep price. The RS6 Avant starts at $126,600. However, it’s worth it for the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a mild hybrid assist for 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That means it’s capable of a 3.3-second 0-60 sprint in addition to holding five people inside. The second row of seats has 38.1 inches of headroom and 37.4 inches of legroom. You can fit 60 cubic feet of cargo behind the front seats.

“In essence, the RS6 Avant is an awesome three-car garage car wrapped up in one. Just remember the gas mileage figures of 14/22/17 mpg city/highway/combined only apply if you’re driving it like a normal wagon. You will spend a large portion of your time not driving it like a normal wagon. And that’s superb.”

Infotainment & Features

8 /10

The V60 might be the highest-rated wagon on our list, but the Volvo V90 Cross Country is absolutely worth including in the top ten. It follows the same design language as every other Volvo, which means it has simple and elegant styling, but modern features and equipment. The V90 Cross Country starts at $59,800. For that price, you get a twincharged (both turbocharged and supercharged) 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The interior can seat five people with the rear seats fitting 38 inches of headroom and 35.9 inches of legroom. Cargo space sits at 39 cubic feet behind the front seats.

“The Volvo V90 Cross Country is one of those cars that drives how you expect based on how it looks. There’s no pretension to being sporty, so no aggressive scowl on its face or fake vents or harsh angles on the bodywork. While we’ve scoffed before at Volvo’s arbitrary decision that all its vehicles should be limited to 112 mph for safety, it’s not a car you’ll have any urge to bust that far through the speed limit with.”

One of the most common new station wagons on the road today is the Subaru Outback. While you will find them in hoards surrounding Southern California mountain towns, they’re relatively affordable, durable, and reliable, which adds up to making them one of the best Subarus for off-roading. The 2025 model has a starting price set at $29,010. There are multiple powertrain options, but the base model is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Moving to the interior, the Outback can hold up to five occupants, while the back row has 39.5 inches of legroom and 39.1 inches of headroom. Among some of the larger and more expensive wagons for sale today is the BMW M5 Touring. It might be big and heavy, but it’s still every bit as fun and engaging as the also-heavy sedan version. As you might expect from BMW, the M5 Touring is full of high-end materials and makes for an elevated driving experience. This M5 wagon starts at $121,500, which gets you a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 PHEV that makes a combined 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Five occupants can enjoy the ride together, and those watching from the back row have 37.7 inches of headroom and 37 inches of legroom. When the theater is empty, it can hold up to 57.6 cubic feet of cargo behind the front seats.

“This is a rare opportunity for enthusiasts to tell BMW directly that wagons can sell well in the US. The M5 Sedan is a great vehicle, but when the Touring only costs marginally more, delivers more practicality, and zero drawbacks, why wouldn’t you get the wagon?”

Midsize Luxury Performance Wagon

One of the coolest wagons Audi has ever built is the RS6 Avant GT. Like the “regular” RS6 Avant, it’s a hefty wagon with plenty of comfort features and a premium interior, but the exterior gets wild coloring and various styling choices to uplift this version. It costs at least $198,900, which is practically unattainable for the vast majority of people. However, it’s pulled and pushed around by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Even with all the extra-sporty features, the interior remains practical with room for up to five people. Expect the same amount of interior space as the normal RS6 Avant, which means this is a very practical wagon indeed.

The 10 Fastest Wagons Ever Built

Welcome to the realm of super-fast wagons, some of which can even give supercars a run for their money.

Characteristics Of Wagons

So what is it that made wagon car sales drop, and what do they still have to offer to new shoppers? New station wagons are not the same as the classic ones that once populated the cross-country roads of the US, but they still have many of the qualities that saw them sell so well. With the latest updates in technology, modern station wagons have overcome many of their shortcomings. But, for better or worse, these are the things you should expect:

  • Design: Naturally, it is their body style that defines the best wagons. They are essentially elongated sedans, with a longer roof and a more practical hatch-like opening for the trunk.
  • Practicality: The dimensions of wagons lend themselves to large rear compartments. This gives rear passengers loads of room, but the primary advantage wagons have over sedans is their impressive cargo capacity. However, even the best wagon cars can’t compete with the top-rated crossover SUVs on the market right now.
  • Comfort: Wagons are ideal family cars for more than just their impressive cabin space. They are also extremely comfort-oriented, with suspensions specifically designed to soak up bumps and deal with difficult pavement conditions. Since many of the brands sticking with the wagon style are premium names, you can also usually expect a fair number of luxury and convenience features.

What To Consider When Buying New Station Wagons

While there aren’t a lot of wagon car models to choose from, you still have to look at each closely in comparison to other popular styles like sedans or crossovers. They definitely have their strengths, but also weaknesses that saw the style fall in popularity in recent years. Some cool station wagons also exist with exceptional performance. Consider the pros and cons carefully before picking a wagon over other types of cars:

Pros

  • Versatile and practical for passengers and their things
  • Easy loading of items into the back
  • Fun and engaging handling
  • Unique styling for people that want something more daring than a sedan

Cons

  • Rearward visibility can be hindered, thanks to stretched rear-end – especially when fully loaded at the back
  • Divisive looks are not always appreciated
  • More expensive than popular compacts with worse fuel economy
